At Seagrave Village Primary, we are committed to nurturing lifelong readers who find joy and purpose in reading. Our reading intent focuses on developing fluent, confident, and expressive readers who can access a wide range of texts across the curriculum. We aim to expose our pupils to high-quality, diverse literature that sparks their imagination and broadens their understanding of the world. Through systematic phonics instruction in the early years and a comprehensive approach to reading comprehension as children progress, we ensure that all pupils develop the necessary skills to become independent readers.
We place great emphasis on reading for pleasure, encouraging children to explore various genres and authors, and fostering a love for books that extends beyond the classroom. Our goal is for every child to leave our school as a competent reader, equipped with the skills and enthusiasm to continue their reading journey throughout their lives.

Reading at home
At Seagrave Village Primary, we recognise the vital role parents play in fostering a love for reading. Our ‘Strive for 5’ initiative encourages children to read at home at five times a week, rewarding this commitment with a class dojo and raffle ticket in the class ‘Strive for 5’ jar. If the pupil’s ticket is picked they can choose a book to be gifted to them by school.
This approach aligns with research showing that just 10 minutes of daily reading can significantly boost a child’s academic performance. We urge parents to make reading a regular part of their daily routine, whether it’s exploring a bedtime story or diving into a book after school. To support this, we recommend letting children choose their reading material, exploring various formats like comics and audiobooks, and involving the whole family in the reading process.
Parents can bring stories to life by using different voices for characters or creating fun reading challenges at home. Remember, your positive attitude and role modelling as a reader can inspire your child’s love for books.
